Green Gorilla has commenced commissioning of its new, state-of-the-art Construction and Demolition (C&D) Resource Recovery Facility in Rotowaro, near Huntly in Waikato. This marks a significant step forward in Aotearoa’s recycling and waste infrastructure.

The $16 million facility is 100% electric and powered by certified renewable energy, making it one of the most sustainable of its kind in the country. Designed to process up to 150,000 tonnes of C&D waste annually, the plant will divert thousands of tonnes from landfill and contribute to New Zealand’s growing circular economy.

Spanning 140 metres in length, the new site features a mix of manual and mechanical sort lines, large storage bunkers, and future-ready automation infrastructure. It will also create 12 full-time jobs in the local community.

Green Gorilla has worked closely with local iwi Waahi Whaanui, the Huntly community, and government partners throughout the commissioning process, ensuring the facility reflects the values of the whenua and those it serves.

The project was co-funded by a $4 million grant from the Ministry for the Environment’s Waste Minimisation Fund. It expands Green Gorilla’s capacity to serve South Auckland, Waikato, Thames/Coromandel, and the Bay of Plenty.

An official opening event is planned for September 2025, below are some recent site photos.
