SCHOOL’S CLEAN RUBBISH

THE TREAD LIGHTLY CARAVAN SWINGS INTO ACTION

12/11/2020

The Litter Blitz at Dawson Primary last Thursday, 12 November, was a great event.
In just over an hour, the students, along with a significant number of parent and community helpers, picked up 232.69 kg of litter and rubbish!
Well done Tread Lightly Caravan - you guys are doing an incredible job. Thanks to Ra and Shannon from Green Gorilla, who volunteered to help out.

Litter Blitz
The Litter Blitz initiative has become a great addition to the Tread Lightly programme as a way for students to “take action” and to show leadership in their community against litter and illegal dumping.
A Blitz involves a school shutting down for two hours to allow every student, teacher and as many parents and community volunteers as possible to pick up litter from neighbouring streets. Tread Lightly undertakes all the organisation, supplies all the equipment and provides a celebration BBQ for students and volunteers.
The Blitzes are also proving very popular to give back and get involved with their local community.
Tread Lightly has organised Litter Blitzes with nine schools across Auckland, hosting 4,578 students, teachers, parents and community volunteers, with 2,606 kg of litter and illegal dumping collected.

Congratulations to Randwick Park Primary and Waikowhai Primary School on their highly successful Litter Blitz!

Between the two events, approximately 870 students, along with multiple teachers, parents, local community and business volunteers converged on their respective local streets to pick up litter. 200kgs of litter was picked up by the kids at Waikowhai Primary School alone and in just over an hour!

Ra from Green Gorilla and the amazing pupils from Room 23 at Randwick Park Primary retrieved some interesting rubbish, some of which included: a mattress, a kid’s scooter, a fire hydrant and a spinning wheel!

Green Gorilla supplied the Gorilla Bags and waste removal service for the events, with which we were so glad that we could help! It was amazing to see the kids eager to get involved with the cleanup and we can't wait to be involved in another Litter Blitz!

SCHOOL CLEAN-UP WITH WESLEY INTERMEDIATE
Welsey Intermediate school put the call out for a Gorilla Bin to get their rubbish clean-up sorted. Well done to all the volunteers. 👏👏👏 Schools are an essential part of Auckland's community, and we were happy to help.
Tēnā Koe
Please accept my thanks on behalf of the students, staff and Board of Trustees at Wesley Intermediate, for the provision of a Skip Bin.
I have been the principal of Wesley Intermediate for one term, and there is certainly a lot to do to improve the learning environment for the tamariki. There is a huge amount of old, broken furniture that is no longer fit-for-purpose, that needs to be disposed of. The school has had a dropping roll for a number of years, and therefore has limited funds to be able to keep on top of disposing of things as they break or become unsuitable for a learning environment.
I am incredibly grateful to have had a group of my friends and family give up their Saturday to fill the bin that you so generously provided for us.

ORGANISE YOUR COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP
Auckland communities and neighbourhoods are generally full of great people; however, they rapidly change with more infill housing and new people. Your community clean-up is a wonderfully practical project that brings together old and new neighbourhood members. The result is a cleaner local environment and a stronger community with new friendships. Green Gorilla love community clean-ups. They tick all our boxes as environmental initiatives centred around local communities. Here are some tips for your community clean-up.

PICK YOUR STREETS
Take a walk around your neighbourhood and note the streets you will want your volunteers to clean up. It’s best to have a list of roads the volunteers can strictly follow.
Then set the clean-up date and time of the day. Auckland can get four seasons in one day, so don’t forget to include a rain date in your plan.

REACH OUT TO YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD
The easiest way to advertise the clean-up is a simple letterbox drop with all the details, including the date, time, the purpose, and a list of things to bring. Make your flyer fun and friendly. Your local library may have a community notice board, and check if your suburb has a Facebook or Neighbourly page.

THE RIGHT TOOLS FOR THE JOB
To get the job done right, you must ensure you have the right tools. Here’s a handy checklist of things to consider:

  • Rubbish bags
  • Rubber gloves
  • Trowels and shovels
  • Rakes
  • Wear something you don’t mind getting dirty
  • Hand sanitiser
  • First aid kit

DISPOSE OF THE WASTE WITH A GORILLA BAG
A Gorilla Bag is the easiest solution to hold the rubbish until it is time to be collected by one of our friendly Gorilla Bag drivers. There are no time limits with a Gorilla Bag, so you store the bag until it’s time for your community clean-up, then open the bag for use. Make sure the placement of the gorilla Bag follows our guidelines.
